the tough questions

Is a board book that went in the toilet cleanable?

Do other mothers ever get sick of picking up the same toys day after day and actually think to themselves "no one is coming over, why should I bother picking them up"?

Is it ridiculous to create errands just to get out of the house when it is raining, cold and you are sick of being stuck inside?

At what age can you start teaching children to pick up their own toys?

At what age do they actually start picking up their own toys?

Do other moms get sick of singing the kiddie songs?

Is it totally crazy to want to spend money on decorations, games, food, take-homes and gifts for a one year old birthday party knowing that she will never remember it?

If I do go crazy on the first birthday party will I regret it afterward and think that it was unnecessary and silly OR will I love that I have the pictures and be happy that I celebrated a major milestone with friends and family?

Is a bike trailer (the kind that the kid rides in behind a bike) an okay first birthday gift even though it is kind of more for the parents than the kid?

After my crazy week last week of working so much today I find myself full of questions, doubt and confusion once again about being a mom. Maybe they aren't really the big, tough questions but it is the stuff on my mind today as I sit here listening to Sam talk and yell in her crib, NOT napping.

Happy Tuesday! What are you thinking about today?

Even though your questions may be rhetorical I'm throwing in my 2 cents :)

I for one am very tired of picking up crayons, memory cards, and stacks of paper every day, and I think why should I bother, every.single.day.

Uh...1 1/2-2ish (I really have no idea :))

Without being yelled at...probably never.

Yes, yes...hell yes!

No, she may not remember it, but you will and you will have pictures that she will love to look at. Plus it is a good excuse to see family who live far away.

I think you would regret it more if you didn't do it. You will love that you did it (although afterward you may swear to never do it again :))

I think it is a great first birthday gift. If she is anything like my kids, she has plenty of toys, books, clothes. This is something the 3 of you can enjoy together, so in my opinion that is the best gift of all.

You are doing a great job, Sam is a lucky girl to have you as her mom.

There is not enough room for all the questions, doubt, and confusion I have today.

Have a good one! :)

In Hawaii the one year luau is probably a bigger deal than some peoples weddings. People save money for it! Its crazy - huge spread of food, live entertainment, decorations, you name it.
But its so important because surviving the first year of life is a big accomplishment and think of all the huge things that have happened in the last year! The party is more for the adults anyway, but usually they try to at least decorate with puppies or ponies or whatever!

GO NUTS!

Just make sure that all the other childhood parties are a bit more mellow...

I'm a little late on commenting, but this struck a chord with me (even though my kids are older). I do get tired of picking up everyday. Sometimes I wonder why I make the kids clean up their toys in their rooms, they're just going to drag them out again the next day. What's the point?

You'll totally enjoy having a big, fun first birthday party. It's worth all the work and decorations, and expense for the memories. Plus, for the 2nd birthday you do cupcakes with family and that's it. :)
